Thank you for registering for our 2016 Freeride Program! Registration is now closed.

Freeride is back and better than ever for 2016, with expanded focus for all Freeride levels, both ski and snowboard, and a travel team with dedicated coaches and support at contests. As with the past two years, the goal is to have fun and improve skills in a safe, encouraging environment geared towards competition-level freeskiing and snowboarding. Emphasis will be placed on mountain safety, solid technical skills, competition strategy, and decision-making. We want every team member to reach their personal best, cheer each other on, and develop mountain skills that will serve a lifetime of safe and happy skiing and riding. Working on line choice, mental techniques, airs and flow within a run will all be part of the program, as well as photo and video tips and techniques for those interested.

The Freeride program is designed for skiers and snowboarders, ages 11-18, who can link fall line (parallel for skiers) turns down most off-piste terrain at Crystal in a variety of conditions, including powder and chopped crud. The 2016 season will begin with an on-snow assessment to ensure placement of each rider in the Crystal Mountain program best suited for their development and enjoyment. Within Freeride, there will be three different programs (descriptions can be found below with registration information).

Ingrid-Backstrom-Crystal-MountainAbout Ingrid Backstrom
Ingrid Backstrom grew up near Seattle, skiing every weekend at Crystal Mountain and camping in an old bookmobile in the parking lot with her family before attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, where she was on the race team. She moved to Squaw Valley after college to postpone getting a real job for a year, but instead discovered competitive freeskiing. She has since appeared in 14 ski movies with companies including Warren Miller, Rocky Mountain Sherpas, 9 films with Matchstick Productions (for which she received Powder Magazine’s Best Female Performance 5 different years and Breakthrough Performance in 2004), and the documentary Steep. Backcountry skiing expeditions have also taken her all over the world.

“I am thrilled to be involved in Crystal Mountain’s Freeride Program—it’s one of my favorite places and I’m so stoked to ski with the team in between my other projects this winter. We’re going to have an awesome time and I’m excited to coach alongside the other rad coaches and ripping team members!” – Ingrid Backstrom

On-Snow Assessment
For those new to Freeride, we will do a friendly, no-pressure first day evaluation to ensure that Freeride is the right fit for the rider. This will consist of riding around in small groups with coaches, as well as one or two off-piste, advanced to expert runs where each rider will go one at a time so that coaches can get a good idea of their strengths. Freeride is fast-paced and challenging, and we know it might not be for everyone this year. We have found that when riders are grouped with peers of similar ages, interests, and abilities, everyone benefits–and given the variety and quality of programs Crystal offers, a perfect spot exists for every rider.
