Youth Freeride Team (ages 9-18)
We are excited to announce that Ingrid Backstrom will be back this year as the Head Coach and official “Chief of Stoke” for the team, working in conjunction with an excellent staff of top-notch coaches. The goal is to have fun and improve skills in a safe, encouraging environment geared towards competition-level freeskiing and snowboarding. Emphasis will be placed on mountain safety, solid technical skills, competition strategy, and decision-making. We want every team member to reach their personal best, cheer each other on, and develop mountain skills that will serve a lifetime of safe and happy skiing and riding. Working on line choice, mental techniques, airs and flow within a run will all be part of the program, as well as photo and video tips and techniques.
About Ingrid Backstrom
Ingrid Backstrom grew up near Seattle, skiing every weekend at Crystal Mountain and camping in an old bookmobile in the parking lot with her family before attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, where she was on the race team. She moved to Squaw Valley after college to postpone getting a real job for a year, but instead discovered competitive freeskiing. She has since appeared in 14 ski movies with companies including Warren Miller, Rocky Mountain Sherpas, 9 films with Matchstick Productions (for which she received Powder Magazine’s Best Female Performance 5 different years and Breakthrough Performance in 2004), and the documentary Steep. Backcountry skiing expeditions have also taken her all over the world.
“I am thrilled to be involved in Crystal Mountain’s Freeride Program—it’s one of my favorite places and I’m so stoked to ski with the team in between my other projects this winter. We’re going to have an awesome time and I’m excited to coach alongside the other rad coaches and ripping team members!” – Ingrid Backstrom
What to Expect
You will spend a lot of time off-piste (not on the groomers) learning how to approach steeper and more technical lines and shred various snow conditions with ease. The Team will be split into two levels (the main group and the competition group) based on ability, age and athletes goals. If you’re that skier or snowboarder looking to confidently attack sick lines with power and style or just bring up the level of your riding, then this is the team for you. If you are hoping to compete in the Junior Freeskiing or Snowboarding Series this year or in the near future, this is the perfect training ground.
Becoming a Freeride Team Member
1. Must be between the ages of 9-18 with the ability and focused attitude to challenge yourself.
2. All skiers and riders must be able to ride all chairs and feel comfortable on steep terrain.
3. You will be evaluated by coaches prior to becoming an official team member. Those that aren’t quite ready will have the opportunity to join our developmental High Adventure program to help reach team member status.
